Rev. Mary Froiland was elected Bishop of the South-Central Synod of
Wisconsin on September 28, 2013. She most recently served as pastor of
Luther Valley Lutheran Church, Beloit, Wisconsin, where she served since
2000. Bishop Froiland earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and
Philosophy from Augsburg College in Minneapolis, MN in 1979, and a Master of
Divinity degree from Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota in
1985. She is married to the Rev. John Froiland, Chaplain at St. Mary’s
Janesville Hospital. They have 3 grown children, one son-in-law, and a

Rev. Erik Jelinek grew up in Billings, MT. He
received a BA in Political Science and Religion from Gustavus Adolphus
College in St. Peter, MN and a M. Div. From Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN.
He has served congregations in Savage, MT and Conrad, MT. For the past 10
years he has served with his wife, Pr. Jennifer Jelinek, at Our Savior's
Lutheran in Beloit. They have two girls, Sierra and Scarlett.
Erik serves as the Director for Evangelical Mission. He is excited to serve
in this position and work with new mission starts and redeveloping
congregations. He has a passion for outreach and is continually looking for
engaging ways to reach out with the gospel message. He also has an interest
in technology and how it can be used to further the mission of the church.

Vicki Hanrahan Serves as your Synod Communicator and
Event Manager. She received a BA in Communication Arts from the University of
Wisconsin and is a 2009 graduate of the synod’s Lay School of Ministry.
Vicki spent the first 20 years of her career in the teleconferencing
industry where her life’s work was about keeping people virtually connected.
Similarly, she finds keeping people in our synod connected to each other and
to the greater church the most exciting aspect of her work. “Together, we
can accomplish so much more than what we can do alone and I’ve seen us do
some amazing things that really do matter as we strive to serve our brothers
As Synod Communicator, Vicki is passionate about communicating where God is
at work in the world in, among, and through Lutherans of our congregations
in south-central Wisconsin. She produces the monthly e-newsletter,
“God’s Work. Our Hands,” and “What Matters.” A great deal of her time
is spent in running the Help Desk where she assists congregations and
partners with a myriad of questions or finds the best person to assist,
making connections between the people of our synod whenever possible. Vicki
also assists with event management with particular emphasis on the event
publicity, websites and registration management. She loves this creative

Sara grew up in Appleton, WI. She received a BA in Religion and Biblical
Languages from Luther College in Decorah, IA and her MDiv from Luther
Seminary in St. Paul, MN. She has been on the South-Central Synod of
Wisconsin staff as an Assistant to the Bishop and Synod Stewardship
Specialist since 2008.
Her personal mission statement is to love Jesus and to help others
love Jesus. Her passion in ministry is that the Church may be real and
relevant in the world today to connect all people to Jesus. A recent trip to
Haiti, with ELCA World Hunger, has reignited her fire for ELCA work around

technology and the good use of it in congregations, works with congregations
in stewardship, provides congregational support throughout the call process,
in mutual ministry, conflict and much more.

Karen is delighted to be the new Executive Assistant to the Bishop.
She focuses her time on managing schedules, providing administrative support
to our rostered leaders, assisting with the mobility and candidacy process
as well as assisting with special synod projects and events. Her experience
in relationship building and her organizational and project management
skills serve her in this new role on the synod staff. She is pleased to be
able to further grow her faith and relationships in this position.
Freitag Joins Synod Staff as New Part-Time Receptionist and Administrative
After serving as a volunteer for the past year, we are delighted that Linda
Freitag has joined the synod staff as our new part-time receptionist and
administrative assistant. Linda will be the new voice of the synod,
answering the phone, receiving visitors and assisting with events and the
myriad of administrative duties that come with working for the Lord in a
synod office. Linda grew up in Faribault, Minnesota. She attended Winona
State University where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary
Education with a minor in Learning Disabilities. While there she was active
in campus ministry. She spent the first 29 years of her career teaching
special education students as well as second graders in the Verona Area
School District where she lives with her husband, and three children. They
are members of St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church where Linda is active
on the Congregational Life ministry team, Women of the ELCA, bible study,
special music and altar guild. Linda enjoys meeting and getting to know
people in a variety of situations. She and her husband, Dan, are busy
attending various school, sporting and musical events with their three
children. Linda enjoys volunteering at the local library, in her children’s
schools, at her church and has been a dedicated synod office volunteer for
over a year.
