Mission
The Wisconsin Council of Churches (WCC) is a community of churches
proclaiming and serving the Triune God. Its mission is to witness
to God's reconciling love in Christ and to be an instrument of that
love in a divided and violent world. Through the Council, member
churches engage together in common ministry in the following areas:
Faith
and Order
Denominations work together through the Faith and Order Commission
to increase understanding and appreciation of one another's spirituality,
theology and practice. The Commission sponsors an annual School
of Prayer, promotes the observance of the Week of Prayer for Christian
Unity throughout the state, and develops study material emphasizing
the meaning of Christian faith for life in the world. It also encourages
denominations to share the special gifts of their traditions with
one another for the sake of mutual enrichment.
Life
and Work
Through
the Life and Work Commission, churches engage in ecumenical
work with Native Americans, migrant farm workers and persons affected
by AIDS/HIV. They
also participate in common work in the areas of sexual orientation,
aging, affordable housing, rural ministry, and women in church and
society.Resources
From time to time, the WCC develops or makes available special programs
and study resources for use by parishes and ecumenical groups. At
present, programs and/or resources are available in the following
areas: Christian Spirituality, Christian Faith and the Death Penalty,
Christian Faith and Human Community, The Faith Community and Welfare
Reform, The Bible and Economic Justice, AIDS/HIV Ministry, and the
Church's Ministry to the Aging.
WCC executive staff are available to help facilitate the use of
these resource materials. Regular WCC publications include Ecunews,
Gaining Ground, a newsletter on rural issues and ministry, and Update
and Empower, the newsletters of Wisconsin IMPACT.
Ownership
and Governance
The WCC is owned and governed by its 20 member judicatories. Each
judicatory has three representatives on the Board of Directors,
including the judicatory executive. The Board of Directors determines
WCC policy and oversees all WCC work.
